If you would like the assistance of a faculty member...
Some HSU professors are available to answer questions, assist with projects, or direct their students to internship or service-learning opportunities. In some cases (usually for more-involved services) a fee may be required. Please bear in mind that faculty members have heavy teaching, scholarship, and service workloads that may prevent them from providing assistance.
The best times to contact faculty with project proposals is the beginning of each semester. Specifically, it is best to contact faculty in August/September for the fall semester, or January for the spring semester. By the middle or end of the semester, faculty members are far less likely to have time to address requests.
The Office for Research and Graduate Studies maintains a Faculty Expertise Directory, a searchable database listing the fields of expertise of the HSU faculty. Searches can be based on a particular field of expertise or on a faculty member's last name. For more information contact the OECBD.

Members of the community, including businesses and NGO's, may seek collaborations with HSU faculty, staff, or students on matters that involve intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets).
To ensure that the engagement/relationships between local businesses and HSU students, faculty, and staff working together on business development projects are positive and clear, we recommend that you discuss intellectual property issues at the beginning. Intellectual property rights are seldom a priority when a project is in its nascent stage. However, it's important to recognize that a small collaborative, exploratory project can evolve over time into a lucrative business enterprise. Therefore, we recommend the following steps to local businesses for initiating projects with Humboldt State faculty, students and staff:
1. If your proposed collaboration involves sharing your trade secrets or other potentially valuable intellectual property you have developed with HSU faculty, staff, or students, you should talk to staff at the HSU Office for Research and Graduate Studies, 826-3949. They will provide you with a sample nondisclosure agreement and encourage you to draft one before you initiate discussions with your potential campus collaborators.
2. Staff in the Office for Research and Graduate Studies can also provide you with HSU's policy regarding intellectual property, and samples of collaborative intellectual property agreements involving HSU and private businesses.
After these steps you are ready to talk to your potential collaborators! Note that the OECBD may be of assistance in identifying potential collaborators.
For additional information contact the Office for Research and Graduate Studies at 826-3949 or the HSU Office for Economic, Community, & Business Development.
